The percentage of middle and high school students (grades 6–12) who reported use of cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, or e-cigarettes on at least 1 day during the 30 days before the survey.

Trends and Most Recent Estimates In 2022, 2.0% of adolescents and young adults aged 12 to 25 initiated cigarette smoking in the past year. Among adolescents in grades 6-12 in 2020, 15.9% were current tobacco users, 15.6% were current e-cigarette users. In 2022, 11.7% of adults aged 18 and older reported current cigarette use (males - 13.4%, females - 10.1%).
Healthy People 2030 Target Eliminate cigarette smoking initiation in adolescents and young adults. Reduce current tobacco use in adoescents to 11.3%. Reduce to 6.1% the proportion of adults who smoke cigarettes.
